#112 Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging in the Workplace: Empowering Young Voices

9/16/2024 by Pepper Russell, IOM

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) aren’t just corporate buzzwords—they’re essential pillars for creating vibrant, innovative, and thriving workplaces. Bringing different perspectives into an organization elevates everything from creativity to problem-solving. But there’s one group that often gets overlooked in these conversations: young voices, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. Empowering these young professionals to contribute is crucial not only for their growth but for the future success of your organization.

Why DEIB Matters
Diversity ensures that a variety of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds are brought together. Equity focuses on giving everyone, regardless of where they start, the opportunity to succeed. Inclusion ensures that everyone feels welcome and valued. Belonging is the emotional piece—it’s what happens when employees feel safe to be their true selves at work.

When DEIB principles are deeply embedded in an organization, employees feel more engaged, more loyal, and are likely to be more innovative. It’s a win-win for both the individual and the company. To truly reap these benefits, we must focus on empowering young voices—particularly those from underrepresented communities—who can offer fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.

How to Empower Young Voices in the Workplace

1. Foster an Inclusive Culture from Day One
When young professionals first join your organization, they’re often eager to learn but may hesitate to share their ideas, especially if they don’t see themselves represented in leadership or the broader team. As the authority voice in the room, you need to make it clear from the very start that their voices matter. During onboarding, emphasize the company’s commitment to DEIB and encourage open dialogue. Let them know their fresh perspective is valuable and welcome.

2. Invest in Mentorship and Sponsorship
Mentorship can be a game-changer for young employees. Pairing them with seasoned workers who will guide them through the challenges of the workplace builds their confidence and helps them grow. Beyond mentorship, though, is sponsorship—where senior leaders actively advocate for young, diverse talent. Sponsorship is critical for ensuring that underrepresented employees have advocates in the room when decisions are made about promotions and opportunities.

3. Encourage Open Dialogue
Young employees, especially those from diverse backgrounds, may feel hesitant to speak up in meetings or offer their ideas. Create a culture where different perspectives are encouraged and valued. This could be as simple as establishing ground rules for meetings to ensure everyone has a chance to contribute or asking for feedback and input from all levels of the company. It’s also important to create safe spaces where young employees feel comfortable voicing their concerns or offering new ideas without fear of judgment.

4. Offer Opportunities for Growth
Professional development is key to keeping young talent engaged. Provide opportunities for growth through workshops, leadership programs, or even stretch assignments. Offering them a path to grow and develop in your organization shows that you’re invested in their future. It also demonstrates that you see their potential and are committed to helping them succeed.

5. Representation Matters
Young employees are far more likely to feel like they belong if they see people like themselves in leadership positions. Representation in leadership signals that success is attainable for everyone, regardless of background. Companies that prioritize DEIB in their hiring and promotion practices help set an example for the younger workers, showing them that they have a place in the company and that their voice matters.

The Power of Young Voices
Empowering young professionals, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, isn’t just a moral imperative—it’s a smart business strategy. Young employees bring fresh perspectives, new ideas, and an eagerness to innovate. When these voices are amplified in a workplace that embraces DEIB, the result is a dynamic, engaged workforce that’s better equipped to tackle today’s challenges. By fostering a culture of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, we create a workplace where everyone feels valued and heard, especially the younger generation. And when young voices are empowered, the future of work looks brighter for us all.
